Location: Crawley / Gatwick 

Hours: 47.5 hours a week Monday - Friday must be flexible

About the role of Operations Manager

This is a high-profile leadership role with overall responsibility for the successful delivery, performance, and growth of regional operations. You will lead business development initiatives, drive operational excellence, and identify opportunities to expand our market presence by strengthening relationships with existing customers and securing new business opportunities.

Working closely with customers and key stakeholders, you will build strong, long-term partnerships that support sustainable growth and enhance our reputation for service delivery. You will be responsible for ensuring operational activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards of quality and customer satisfaction.

As a people leader, you will inspire, develop, and motivate high-performing teams, creating a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. You will ensure employees are equipped with the skills, training, and resources required to meet operational demands, while maintaining clear and consistent communication on safety initiatives, business updates, operational procedures, and contract requirements.

Collaborating with colleagues across the wider business, you will share best practice, drive innovation, and identify opportunities to improve operational performance, customer outcomes, and commercial success. You will play a key role in implementing strategic initiatives that enhance efficiency, deliver sustainable value, and maximise profitability.

You will be accountable for embedding robust management controls, governance frameworks, and performance measures, ensuring operational productivity and financial targets are achieved. This includes working closely with commercial and finance teams to review performance metrics, monitor costs, manage budgets, and drive informed decision-making.

Health, Safety, Sustainability, and Environmental stewardship will remain central to your responsibilities. As a leader, you will champion a proactive safety culture, ensuring full compliance with all Health, Safety, Quality, Environmental, and ESG standards. You will be accountable for promoting best practice, managing risk effectively, and ensuring all operational activities are delivered safely and responsibly.

About you:

An accomplished Traffic Management professional with extensive industry experience and a strong background in operational leadership. Proven ability to lead high-performing teams, optimise resource utilisation, and deliver safe, efficient, and commercially successful operations. Recognised for building strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and colleagues, creating a culture of trust, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Skilled in identifying opportunities to enhance operational efficiency, improve service delivery, and increase profitability while maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance. Demonstrates strong commercial awareness and strategic thinking, contributing to depot growth, business development, and long-term operational success. Thrives in dynamic environments and consistently delivers results through effective leadership, collaboration, and a customer-focused approach.

 

What good looks like for an Operations Manager:

  • Relevant Lantra Sector Scheme qualifications  
  • Full driving licence, with no more than 6 points. Any driving bans must have been expired for at least 5 years
  • IOSH Managing Safely/SSSTS/SMSTS or equivalent 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills, and the ability to build strong working relationships and network with sector stakeholders 
  • Numeracy skills to manage budgets and bid costings 
  • Pragmatic and ability to create solutions that meet business needs 
  • Collaborative in approach  
  • Proficient in the use of a PC, Microsoft Office software and ability to work with other business management systems and use remote technology 
  • Local knowledge of the region’s construction and maintenance market, particularly National Highways, local authority highway maintenance and utilities highways works
  • Experience leading a team within an operational environment

We would also appreciate it if you have:

  • TTME
  • Other formal commercial or business management qualifications
  • Competent in the use of TM design CAD software
