Job Title - Field Ecologist

Job Type Permanent: 

Salary: Highly Competitive depending on skills and experience, with company van or allowance and general benefits. General hours of work are 40 hours per week, between Monday and Friday.

Location: Home Based / South Midlands/North Wiltshire. Travel will be required, hence a full clean driving licence is essential.

Significant amount of site / field work. The work covers a large area therefore flexibility to be able to spend nights away, driving to locations and ability to work remotely are key requirements for this role.

About the role of a Field Ecologist / ECoW

You will be joining a friendly and professional team delivering consultancy services to a wide range of clients across the UK with a track record of providing client focused and high-quality support to infrastructure and construction industries. We work on a wide range of project types from private dwellings, local authority and major infrastructure projects (Highways and Rail).

As you will be mainly field based the role will involve assisting with protected species/habitat surveys and Ecological Clerk of Work duties (ECoW). This role will support the wider CGS team in their landscape works as well as supporting a diverse client base. As an ECoW you will provide advice on ecological and environmental related issues during the construction of developments and clearance of vegetation. The role while initially ECoW focussed,  has the opportunity to develop and expand towards the successful candidates career aspirations.

Variety and travel are key aspects of life as a Field Ecologist, so you'll need to enjoy this part of the job, as travelling and staying away from home is a regular requirement, particularly during peak season. As with all ecological consultancy work, professionalism is a requirement, with the ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive client relationships.

Key responsibilities of a Field Ecologist:

We’re looking for a professional, dynamic, and motivated individual with the ability to work alone and as part of a team.

  • Delivering habitat & protected species surveys and ECoW support.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, planning conditions and associated documents and to help reduce risks and delays.
  • Providing advice to construction / clearance teams regarding ecological constraints, mitigation and enhancement opportunities
  • Producing and inputting into reporting
  • Stakeholder Engagement (such as Wildlife Trusts, Environmental Health Officers, Natural England, Heritage England, Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities etc

What good looks like as a Field Ecologist

  • Qualified with a degree (or similar) in a relevant scientific or environmental discipline
  • Ecological site survey experience (protected species surveys, Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) / Phase 1 habitat surveys)
  • ECoW experience, providing site checks and destructive searches
  • A full, clean driver’s licence is essential.
  • Knowledge of ecology, legislation, and survey techniques and the planning process
  • Good report preparation / writing skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Good IT skills with a working knowledge of spreadsheets and office word processing

What else looks good

  • Membership of an appropriate professional body, all candidates will be supported to be working towards chartership.
  • Advantageous to hold or be working towards a Protected Species Licence.
  • Few years of industry experience
  • Data collation and interpretation experience
  • CSCS Card holder – training can be supplied if required
